Chapter 1

"The roof only covers about half the floor ..."

Chapter 6

Chapter 7

"Sunshine implies ultra-violet ..."

"Yeah, but I want to see how we can get the hats into the logic ..."

Many others remained just mysterious names to them ...

Chapter 10

"Lay all your papers face up so I can see them."

Chapter 11

Chapter 14

... and could draw the chemical states of water.

Chapter 15

It contained not one, but two rivers that met on their way to the sea.

Chapter 16

Chapter 17

... they knew geometry was only a small step away from navigation.

Chapter 19

When he turned his attention to Port Town ...

Chapter 20

"The sun, out there in space, is always shining the same color, day and night."

Chapter 21

"Slicing is a good name. It's actually called division ..."

"Speed, multiplied by Time, equals Distance."

Chapter 22

"There it is. Speed equals Distance divided by Time."

Chapter 27

Chapter 28

When not writing, they learned more formulas ...

Chapter 29

... a huge bay several miles across in front of them.

Ilika began teaching the finer points of writing ...

Chapter 30

Neti, in a burst of sympathy, handed Miko one dark, sweet, juicy berry ...

The rest admitted they had no idea such trees existed.

When everyone had eaten, they followed him around, discussed the major divisions of the compass ...

The latitude lines, projected onto a constantly-moving surface, gave a little more trouble.

Chapter 31

Ilika remained neutral about the idea, and plunged ahead into the measurement of angles ...

... no bush or tree anywhere near the camp went unmeasured.

Chapter 32

Mati opened her mouth to call for help ...

Chapter 34

A creek tumbled through the town, flowing westward to the ocean ...

Chapter 35

"Finally, we have a globe. Here is your kingdom ..."

Chapter 39

"And Rini had berries ready as soon as they woke up."

Chapter 42

"I've mentioned the distributive property before ..."

Chapter 44

Everyone gathered around to see what Rini had drawn.

Rini made notes as Miko found the numbers. Neti watched ...

Then Rini did his part and combined the results.

Buna carefully worked out the distribution, digit by digit ...

C divided by C nearly jumped out at her, twice.

Buna was right beside Neti for the entire process ...

Rini read the answer, the largest number he had ever used ...

She got pencil and paper and worked through the problem. "Wow. That's big."

Rini soon finished drawing another triangle to represent the elevation problem.

"Toli, Sata, Rini, check this step for me."

Chapter 45

"We are here, at the north end of the big meadow, this area on the map with no trees ..."
