J. Z. Colby's program: The Future of Young-Adulthood -- Childhood's End?

Saturday, 2 July, Studio Suite, 12 noon - 1:15 pm

An extended childhood was one of the perks of a century of wealth from cheap energy and the technology to use it. That era may well be winding down. If so, today's young adults -- roughly, those between the ages of 10 and 20 -- will be facing a tough transition just as their parents are struggling in other areas. The NEBADOR series of young-adult science fiction novels was inspired by a Muse who obviously believes that young people need to begin sharpening their wits and honing their skills now, before the future forces them to do so.

This program IS:
    - controversial, as it is, like climate change, too complicated to ever conclusively prove or disprove
    - for Young Adults (roughly ages 10-20, including those younger who are "going on 10+")
    - for adults who work with Young Adults and are concerned with their future

This program is NOT:
    - for anyone looking for a "feel-good" diversion
    - for Young Adults who want to avoid hearing about bad/dark/ikky/hard stuff
    - for Young Adults whose parents want them protected from knowledge of that stuff

Cecelia Harper
Cecelia Harper, a NEBADOR critiquer and several voices in the dramatic audiobook, introduced J. Z. Colby and added an adult perspective to the presentation.

Katelynn Persons
One of J. Z. Colby's gifted helpers, Katelynn Persons, 16, was present to provide a young-adult perspective on any questions that come up. She is the voice of Kibi in the dramatic audiobook, and the author of the short story Kibi and the Search for Happiness, which was published in NEBADOR Book Four.

Suggested Reading:
    - The Long Descent, John Michael Greer
    - The Long Emergency, James Howard Kunstler
    - essays by psychologist Carolyn Baker
    - J. Z. Colby's Youth Futures blog
    - the NEBADOR young-adult science fiction novels

Audio recording of the talk (high-speed internet connection probably necessary):

    MP3 - 1:00:00 - 32Kbps - 14MB
